Faith Overview

Faith Overview

At Preston Muslim Girls’ High School, we strongly believe that it is our collective moral duty to contemplate the welfare of all mankind, as our faith teaches us that this basic duty transcends race, colour, beliefs, gender or faith. Faith plays a vital and integral role in promoting cohesion and enhances within us all respect, responsibility and resilience. The school aims to rejoice all that faith has to give and instil a sense of joy at being part of the local and wider community. We have a comprehensive approach to faith, welcoming people of all beliefs and recognising that we are all part of, and contributing to, something far greater than ourselves.

We are proud of our faith, its values and its emphasis on a shared view of humanity – one family and one world for which we all share responsibility. We take a progressive, outward-facing, inclusive and globally-orientated interpretation of the Islamic faith.

Everything we do is designed to enable all our students to live their lives according to the values of self-discipline, compassion, mutual respect for all people regardless of difference and respect for the earth itself. We teach them regarding different religions and the similarities and the differences between them, instilling respect for different faiths and cultural diversity in the way people choose to live in a modern British society. These fundamental values underpin the Islamic faith and our British way of life.

The school aims to celebrate all that faith has to give and instil a sense of joy at being part of the local and wider community.

A great emphasis is placed on character development – promoting values such as respect, self-discipline, care, tolerance, patience, modesty, gratitude, humility sincerity and love for each other. We promote an ethical lifestyle, enabling our learners to feel empowered to fulfil their responsibilities to themselves, their families, wider humanity and the environment around them.

We promote fundamental British values to prepare our pupils to live in a multi-faith modern Britain. We want to prepare all our students to achieve to their potential, fully engaged citizens in multi-cultural 21st century Britain. We want to support and help them explore how they can apply faith values in their everyday lives as committed British citizens. We want them to become model British citizens, inspired by faith to uphold fundamental British values, reject extremism in any form and to prosper as part of British society. We want them to make a genuine and determined contribution and, by their actions, to demonstrate the best of what the Muslim faith can contribute to British life and culture.

School Values

At our school, our priority is to strive for the values that bring us closer to Allah, as taught in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The foundation of our character is built upon faith, kindness, and righteousness, with love and compassion at the heart of our actions. With the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ as our guide, we uphold the Islamic tradition of cultivating noble values. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you.”
(Qur’an 49:13)

By embodying these values, we strive to develop character, strengthen our faith, and contribute positively to our community and the world.

Patience (Sabr)

Patience is the ability to remain steadfast in times of hardship and to endure difficulties with faith in Allah’s wisdom. Life is full of trials, but through patience, we find strength, peace, and Allah’s blessings.

“How wonderful is the affair of the believer! All his affairs are good for him, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him; if something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience, and that is good for him.” — (Sahih Muslim)

Modesty (Haya)

Modesty is a sense of humility and decency in speech, actions, and appearance, reflecting one’s faith and self-respect. True modesty is not just about how we dress but how we carry ourselves with dignity and respect.

“Modesty is a branch of faith.” — (Sahih Muslim)

Gratitude (Shukr)

Gratitude is acknowledging and appreciating Allah’s countless blessings, leading to contentment and spiritual growth. When we are grateful for what we have, Allah increases our blessings and fills our hearts with peace.

“He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah.” — (Sunan Abi Dawood 4811)

Humility (Tawadhu’)

Humility is recognising that all greatness belongs to Allah alone and treating others with kindness and respect. A truly strong person is not one who boasts but one who remains humble, no matter their achievements.

“Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him in status.”
— (Sahih Muslim 2588)

Sincerity (Ikhlas)

Sincerity is performing every action with pure intentions, seeking only Allah’s pleasure rather than worldly recognition. The value of our deeds is determined by the sincerity of our intentions, not by how others perceive them.

“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will be rewarded according to their intention.” — (Sahih al-Bukhari , Sahih Muslim)
