The STEM club is an after-school club which allows the students to enhance their knowledge around global scientific issues and develop pupils’ skills, interest and enthusiasm in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The main role is to identify, design and construct a solution to a problem with dedication, enthusiasm and a pro-active attitude.

Pupils have understood the importance of nature and how nature has an impact on our everyday lives by learning to plant, grow and harvest vegetables. They successfully grew spinach, lettuce and radishes to make a healthy organic salad. The pupils focused on essential life skills, learning to appreciate the laborious process of seed germination and cultivation to produce stunning outcomes.

The Plastics challenge was to design and produce a product made entirely from plastic material. The product had to be useful for the children of Nepal, who live in poverty and collect waste plastic to sell and recycle. The aim was to produce a product which the children can use. The pupils made products such as a chandelier, pen pots, a charity box, picture frame and a decorative ladybug.

The school also recently took part in a regional STEM project designing and modelling an eco-friendly hotel, mentored by a local research company. Over 10 weeks, the pupils worked extremely hard showing their dedication and enthusiasm and successfully completed the project. The pupils attended the graduation day where they presented their project to a panel of assessors from different industries. The feedback from the assessors was excellent. The pupils were very confident when delivering their presentation and answered all the questions the panel asked them. The pupils received a bronze award industrial cadets’ certificate.

The STEM club also visited the Big Bang Fair North West where they took part in hands-on activities, interactive workshops, theatre shows and had the opportunity to talk to scientists and engineers from local and national companies from all over the UK. They got involved with lots of different activities including the art of making soap, how viruses spread in our bodies as well as making their own hand-held torches.
