Curriculum Statement: Health and social Care

Curriculum Statement: Health and social Care

Intent

Our aim in Health and Social Care is to provide an opportunity that extends beyond GCSE and provides a foundation for further study post-16. We recognise that, although pupils work predominantly towards GCSE, a path that is solely focused on GCSE is not appropriate for all pupils.

The Pearson BTEC qualification is an approved high value 14-16 qualification that is specifically designed for those pupils who wish to pursue further study and/ or a career within the health and social care sector. It broadens the pathways available to them at post 16.

The Pearson BTEC offers an exciting and challenging course. By studying for this award, pupils will gain important knowledge and understanding and skills that will equip them for the future. The skills acquired are applicable to a range of post-16 study, although the B.T.E.C.  Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care is designed for learners who wish to acquire sector-specific knowledge.

Implementation

The award is designed to be taught alongside G.C.S.E. courses. It provides a valuable insight into the professional sector of health and social care. It is specifically designed for the 14-16 age group. It is graded across Levels 1 and 2 to recognise the achievement of all pupils and is assessed using assignments and practical tasks suited to vocational study.

Impact

Health and Social Care is a different and interesting subject. It gives learners the opportunity to develop knowledge in the following areas:

  • the life stages and key characteristics in physical, intellectual, emotional and social development (P.I.E.S.) classifications and the different factors that can affect an individual’s development
  • different life events and how individuals can be supported through change
  • health and social care conditions, how these can be managed and services available
  • the barriers that an individual may encounter and how these can be overcome.
  • the skills, attributes and values required to give care and how these benefit the individual
  • how factors affect health and well-being
  • how physiological indicators and lifestyle can affect health
  • recommendations and actions to improve health.

This Tech Award complements the learning in GCSE programmes such as English. It will also complement the theoretical aspects covered in Biology by allowing the application of knowledge in a vocational context.
