Intent
At Preston Muslim Girls’ High School, we aim to provide a curriculum that encourages every pupil to ‘achieve their best’ through development of personal and life skills to help them to manage their lives in a healthy and positive way.
Our Physical Education curriculum helps pupils to experience and build and expand on prior learning which consolidates skills learnt from the previous year and suggests further areas for improvement in physical activities in a safe environment.
PMGHS offers a broad curriculum that inspires pupils to lead healthy active lives. Pupils are challenged through practical and theoretical opportunities which in turn helps pupils understanding of resilience, tolerance, co-operation, responsibility, aspirations and respect. Developing confidence is key in increasing their self-motivation which is encouraged throughout by analysing their work and understanding what makes a performance effective. Pupils, at PMGHS, understand the key concepts of ‘leadership in sport’ through refereeing, umpiring and delivering warm-ups and cool down activities to their peers.
Through the PE activities, pupils also develop their physical, social and psychological wellbeing. They understand the benefits of taking part to build mental health to manage pressure.
Implementation
Pupils’ all have full access to a variety range of indoor and outdoor, team and individual activities which are differentiated to meet all pupils needs and styles. All pupils take part in core PE from Year 7 through to Year 11. The broad curriculum supports our curriculum intent. In year 7 and 8 pupils undertake a series of baseline tests to assess their ability and components of fitness.
In KS3, pupils work on improving their range of skills across a variety of physical activities, this is also supported through an extra-curricular programme. Our inclusive curriculum also offers hiking at Ingleton, an overnight residential at Towerwood in year 8, Orienteering and Aikido. Our end of year rewards trips complements the PE curriculum in further developing pupils’ skills in Outdoor activities, with visits to Chill Factore, Haigh Woodland Park and Rock and River. Our whole school Sports day celebrates effort, establishes a sense of belonging and challenges all abilities to fulfil their potential.
In KS4, pupils continue to follow a broad curriculum with an emphasis on lifelong learning and continuing participation in physical activities. Pupils can also take the option of completing an OCR Nationals qualification in Sports Studies, which places emphasis on Sports Leadership, practical performance, Outdoor Education and contemporary issues in sport. Pupils completing this qualification get opportunities to learn new skills in Rock Climbing, hiking, Kayaking and Paddleboarding. In year 10, Pupils also have the option of completing a Bronze DofE qualification. This builds on their volunteering, physical, learning new skills, expedition training and assessment.
Our PE curriculum is sequenced to allow every child has access to statutory areas of the PE national curriculum.
Impact
