Monday and Thursday Sunnah Fast Programme Nov – Jan 2020/2021
As part of the development of pupils’ spirituality, the school will be launching the ‘Monday and Thursday Fast Programme’ from week beginning 9th November 2020. With daylight hours now shortening, it is felt that this Sunnah (practice) can now be revived in our school till the end of January 2021. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged his followers to fast on these days.
- Aa’ishah (may the Almighty be pleased with her) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings of the Almighty be upon him) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. (Tirmidhi, Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah)
- Abu Hurayrah (may the Almighty be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of the Almighty (peace and blessings of the Almighty be upon him) said: “Deeds are shown (to the Almighty) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.” (Tirmidhi)
- Sahl ibn Sa’d reported that the prophet peace be upon him, said: “There is a gate to Paradise that is called Ar-Rayyaan. On the Day of resurrection, it will say: ‘where are those who fasted?’ When the last one has passed through the gate will be locked.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Fasting encourages self-discipline and empathy for those who are impoverished, however, we are keen to stress that this fast is optional. Pupils must be mindful that Mondays and Thursdays will be normal school days and they must be physically well to manage the fast, without letting it affect their learning.
